To Call Internationally from Hungary

In order to make a call from Hungary you must first dial 00 before entering the number and then the country code. You can easily look up country codes online.

For example, if you were to call the U.S.A. from Hungary you would dial 00 (the IDD) and then 1(the country code) followed by the telephone number.

To Call Internationally to Hungary

To call internationally to Hungary you must first dial 011 (the IDD) followed by the country code. The country code for Hungary is +36.

Calling Within Hungary

If you are calling locally in Hungary, you will need to add the in country code in front of your call. The in-country code is 6.

Phone Installation in Hungary

In order to get a landline installed in your home you only need to visit T-Home or UPC either in person or on their website. There you can apply for a fixed phone line.

Note that T-home owns the majority of landlines and going with them may allow for quicker installation.

Public Phones

Public phones are operated by 10, 20, 50, and 100-forint coins or by phone cards. The cards are sold at newsstands, post offices, supermarkets, and hotels. Phone cards costs anywhere from 1000 to 2000 HUF.

Prepaid Phone Cards

All of the telephone providers offer prepaid cards for 4G telephones. SIM cards are available in the shops. Make sure to bring your ID and fill out paperwork for both a new SIM card and prepaid card.

Skype, Google, and Other Ways to Connect

Skyping, Facebook messenger or Facetiming is a great way to communicate with your loved ones at home. You can still use your account anywhere as long as Wi-Fi or 3G or 4G is offered on your phone. Some people like to stay connected through texting on aps like Whatsapp. Experiment and find a device and program that works for you. Connect with other expats on the forums or in expat interviews to find out what they are using.

Using these aps can incur high costs as they use a lot of data and can easily lead to overages. Try to use them on Wi-Fi to save on data.
