The European Schools

The capital of Europe, a lot of European citizens come to work and live in Brussels. Initially, European schools were created to welcome children of the European institutions staff. They are primarly open to European civil servants that have a priority for their children (children of category I). According to availability, the following criterias are applied:

  1. categories I (European Institutions ) and II (Institutions with financing agreement);
  2. brothers and sisters in the school already;
  3. location depending on the residence;
  4. date of the submition for the registration dossier (first come, first served).

For the children of all the categories, a demand of registration before the director of the school is mandatory.

The European Schools offer several language section that can represent, depending on the needs, all the languages of the European Union. Pupils are registered in their mother tongue section. All along their scholarship they keep this one as their first language (Language 1). Except the programme with the mother tongue teaching, all the other courses and their contents are identical in each language section. Maths education is taught, if possible, in the first language.

They welcome pupils from the nursery. The second cycle in European school is validated by a European Baccalaureat, certified in all the other European countries. It is made by 5 writing exams and 4 orals.

As the European schools highlight the importance to the languages:

  1. a first foreign language (Language II) is taught from the first year in the primary school to the baccalaureat.
  2. From the second year of the secondary cycle, pupils learn a second foreign language (Language III).
  3. They have the possibility to study a third foreign language (Language IV) from the 4th year in secondary education,
  4. and even a fourth one (Language V) from the 6th year.

Usually, all the official languages of the European Union can be offered; however the offer depends often on the ressources in the school. Maths is mandatory and all levels are subject to an exam at the baccalaureat.

The British School of Brussels
I moved to Belgium when I was 4; and have only recently moved back to the US, my country of birth.

I highly recommend the British School of Brussels (BSB). I was educated there throughout Primary and Secondary school. I left the school with high qualifications and fluent in french.

Find out more from http://www.britishschool.be/. Couldn't recommend this International School enough.
