Removal Companies calculate their prices from a number of factors:

  • The load size
  • The distance to be travelled
  • The type of furniture
  • The number of men required for the job

To be able to get an accurate quote, an inventory of what is to be moved is essential. Although some companies will visit your home, it is often possible to develop an inventory without doing so. An inventory achieves three important goals:

  • A complete list of all items to be moved
  • Proof to provide to an insurance company if a claim is filed
  • Easier unpacking (with numbered and labeled boxes and a spreadsheet)

Making up an inventory also makes it easier to determine what can be sold, given away or simply left behind. Besides the weight and volume of your possessions, you should also let the mover know as much as possible about circumstances such whether it will be necessary to carry items up and down stairs, parking and road conditions at both ends of the move

Smaller moving companies can be less expensive, but for complex moves or extra services (such as providing boxes and packing services or transporting vehicles, pianos or pets), a major mover is probably the way to go. Be sure the mover is accredited with an industry association and properly licensed. If finances are especially tight and time is not of the essence, consider a "groupage service": where your possessions are allocated space in containers to fill them up, whenever there are a few spare square meters. However, it can take weeks or months for your possessions to arrive.

In all cases, the company should offer a refund guarantee and a maximum shipping time in writing, along with the quote for shipping costs. It's a good idea to obtain insurance coverage for valuable or fragile items. In most cases, this will require allowing the removal company to pack those items. Take photographs of items to be insured before packing to present proof of their condition for insurance claims. However, the insurance policy should be contracted with a different company than the removal company.
