There are no area codes in Luxembourg. New phone numbers are 8 digits in size including the extension, however older numbers may range from five to nine digits.
Company numbers usually show up as four digits followed by a dash and a number, for example 1234-1. This is to indicate that the call will go through to a switchboard.
There are several telephone companies, but to be connected you first need to take out an initial subscription with P&T Luxembourg. This is the national Luxembourg telecommunications company.

Once you are signed up with P&T, you can choose a provider. Subscribers must be over 18 and provide a passport or identity card. Part of the connection costs needs to be paid in advance by credit or debit card. Bills are then sent monthly and must be paid within two weeks from the billing date, usually by direct debit or bank transfer.
To cancel a subscription, contact P&T at least 15 days before the date on which the subscription is to end.

Public telephones can be found in most Post Offices, supermarkets, train or bus stations. They only take phone cards as coin-operated public phones have been phased out.
