The South American country of Columbia is in the midst of an election that is looking like it could create a massive political pivot. After polls closed on Sunday 29th May, the leftist presidential candidate Gustavo Petro was in the lead with 40% of the votes against the populist businessman Rodolfo Hernández at 28%. Colombia is in the throes of major political unrest due to an economy which is in a downward spiral because of the Covid-19 pandemic, social unrest and rapidly deteriorating security in the country. The robust number of eligible voters is tallied at 39 million but abstention reached 45.2%. After the first round last Sunday, Gustavo Petro was a clear winner as he has received 40.32% of the votes and will face Rodolfo Hernandez (28.20%) for the second round of the presidential election on June 19th. We got the result yesterday: Candidate Gustavo Petro won the second round of the presidential election with 50.44% of the votes and becomes the first leftist president of Colombia. Huge change for the country and it reinforces the trends with South America moving towards leftist governments.
