Emergency services in Taipei

Tools:

The Ambulance and Fire emergency number is 119. This is a 24 hour service.
For Police, call 110.
For Domestic Violence or Sexual Assault, call 113.
Most of the public telephone booths will allow you to call 110 or 119 for free.

There is also assistance in English provided by the Taiwanese government. There is a 24-hour toll-free foreigner service hotline at 0800-024-111.

Police departments usually have a Foreign Affairs Police unit staffed by English speaking officers. Police stations are marked with a red light above the door and display a sign with the word "Police" clearly printed in English.

Crime & Safety

Taiwan is very safe most of the time. Always exercise caution, especially in more risky situations. In crowded areas such as night markets or festivals, pickpockets are a known problem. Massage parlours, barbershops, and nightclubs may operate as covers for prostitution and can be dangerous.

Women should be cautious when out alone, but not more so than anywhere else in the world.

Natural Distaste

Taiwan often experiences typhoons during the summer months and early fall. The East Coast is most susceptible.

Heavy monsoon rains are also frequent during the summer. This can cause a variety of issues including falling rocks in the mountains.

Taiwan is also located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, resulting in frequent earthquakes. Though common, it is rare for earthquakes to cause much damage. The building codes in this area are also extremely strict, helping to protect the people.

Home to many exotic animals, Taiwan is also host to several types of poisonous snakes. These include the bamboo viper, Russel's viper, banded krait, coral snake, Chinese cobra, Taiwan habu, and "hundred pacer". To avoid an encounter, make noise as you hike, wear long trousers, and avoiding overgrown trails.
