The city is located in the heartland of the Mazovian Region - the most populous and the largest of 16 Polish regions. It is situated in the center of large lowland (Masovian Plain). Warsaw adjoins a large forest complex just to it's western borders - Kampinos Forrest (covered by Kampinos National Reserve).

The Polish capital has a continental humid climate. The temperature in summer can reach as high as 30°C (86°F), with an average 18°C (64°F) in July. With as much as 20% of its population being either Jewish Poles or foreign born it was the most diverse city in Poland.
