Warsaw

Warsaw, the capital of Poland and it's biggest city, is located in east-central Poland on both sides of the Vistula River. As of 2007 it has 1 700 536 inhabitants ( ca. 2,600,000 including metropolitan area) and is the 8th biggest city of in European Union. It is spread across 516.9 square kilometers (199.6 sq mi) with a population density of 3,289.2 inhab./km2 (8,519.1/sq mi).

The city is located in the heartland of the Mazovian Region - the most populous and the largest of 16 Polish regions. It is situated in the center of large lowland (Masovian Plain). Warsaw adjoins a large forest complex just to it's western borders - Kampinos Forrest (covered by Kampinos National Reserve).

The Polish capital has a continental humid climate. The temperature in summer can reach as high as 30°C (86°F), with an average 18°C (64°F) in July. In the winter time however, it may drop far below 0°C (32°F), with an average -2°C (28°F) in January. July is the most rainy month and snow is nothing unusual in winter.

Warsaw has a quite homogeneous population, however it is becoming more diversified especially in the last decade. Before World War II the city has been very diversified demographically and culturally and was always a destination of internal and foreign immigration, especially from Eastern Europe. With as much as 20% of its population being either Jewish Poles or foreign born it was the most diverse city in Poland.

Poland is situated in Central Europe, between the Baltic Sea on the north and the Karpatian Mountains on the south. With 38.5 million inhabitants Poland has the eighth largest population in Europe and the 33rd largest in the world.

Poland is a very homogeneous country with ca.96% of people with Polish nationality. The main language is Polish, but many people, especially from younger generations speaks foreign language (mainly English and German).

Poland is a European Union member since May 2004.

The currency in Poland is the Polish Zloty (PLN).
