If you don't want (or are ineligible to qualify
for) healthcare protection from the country here
you normally live, your situation depends on the
country where you originally came from. If you
wish, you can register with a specific healthcare
protection from your country of origin when provided),
but you will still pay and benefit from the local
system. You can find information (benefit packages
and prices) on the web.
Everyone must have health coverage. OHIP
are applied to everyone (it takes about 3 months
to come, so you better arrange you health coverage
in the meantime). Additional health plans are
available from independent companies covering
all drugs and independent surgical procedures.
These costs can be paid on a monthly basis.
A very useful number to have is for Info-Sante
(a 24 hour health information phone line). There
is one for each CLSC (a CLSC is a Montreal clinic).
You can look for CLSCs in your area in the phone
book, in the business section at the beginning
of the C's.
The two downtown hospitals are the Montreal General
(937-6011) near Concordia and the Royal Victoria
(842-1231) near McGill.
