A "National Day" is one of the highlights in a country's celebratory calendar as it recognizes the birth of a nation, either in history or symbolically. This nationhood can be symbolized by the date of independence, of becoming republic or a significant date for a patron saint or a ruler (birthday, accession, removal). Often a national holiday, celebrations range from fireworks to kites and dates can be fixed or movable.

Here are some upcoming celebrations from around the world.

USA

Date: July 4th

History

The United States of America celebrates Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, in celebration of the declaration of independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1776. It has been a paid federal holiday since 1938.

Customs

The day is associated with summer festivals of fireworks, parades, hot dogs, picnics, and the American classic of baseball. Neighborhoods, stores, and homes are decorated in red, white, and blue with the flag flying high. The soundtrack for the festivities include "The Star-Spangled Banner", "God Bless America", "America the Beautiful", "My Country, 'Tis of Thee", "This Land Is Your Land", "Stars and Stripes Forever", and, regionally, "Yankee Doodle" in northeastern states and "Dixie" in southern states. Americana at it's finest!

Where to Celebrate

Major fireworks displays are held in New York City, Chicago on Lake Michigan, San Diego over Mission Bay; Boston on the Charles River, St. Louis on the Mississippi River, San Francisco over the bay, and on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. In a act of international celebration, the annual Windsor-Detroit International Freedom Festival is celebrated in Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario. One of the world's largest fireworks displays over the Detroit River is a joint festival of fourth of July and Canada Day.

Canada

Date: July 1st (unless that date falls on a Sunday, in which case July 2 is the statutory holiday).

History

Canada Day (French: Fête du Canada) is the national day of Canada. A federal statutory holiday, it marks the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, enactment of the British North America Act (today called the Constitution Act). This united three colonies into a single country called Canada within the British Empire. Originally called Dominion Day (French: Le Jour de la Confédération), the name was changed in 1982, the year the Canada Act was passed.

Customs

Frequently referred to as "Canada's birthday", most communities across the country host outdoor public events, such as parades, carnivals, festivals, barbecues, air and maritime shows, fireworks, and free musical concerts. There are also frequent citizenship ceremonies for new citizens. Queen Elizabeth II occasionally officiates the celebration.

Celebrating Canada Day can be a cause of friction in the province of Quebec, where the holiday is overshadowed by Quebec's National Holiday, on June 24. Canada Day also coincides with Quebec's Moving Day, when many fixed-lease apartment rental terms expire.

Where to Celebrate

Celebrations differ throughout the vast nation, however the capital, Ottawa, hosts the largest concerts and cultural displays on Parliament Hill. The governor general and prime minister typically officiate, though the monarch or another member of the Royal Family may also attend or take the governor general's place. Smaller events are mounted in other parks around the city and in Gatineau, Quebec.

France

Date: July 14th

History

La Fête Nationale (known outside of France as Bastille Day) commemorates the Storming of the Bastille, which is considered the start of the French Revolution. The military parade in Paris has been held every year since 1880, except during World War II.

Parades, communal meals, dances, parties and fireworks mark the festivities. France's Tricolours (French national flag) are prominently on display throughout the country on buildings, clothing, and faces.

Where to Celebrate

The oldest and largest regular military parade in Europe is held on the morning of the 14th of July, on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. The President of the Republic attends the parade and often gives an interview to members of the press. The president also holds a garden party at the Palais de l'Elysée.

Bastille Day celebrations are also common around the world. Events are held in London, Liège, Budapest, Franschhoek, and all over the USA.

India

Date: August 15th

History

The Independence Day of India commemorates its independence from British rule and its birth as a sovereign nation. At the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru, read out the famous Tryst with destiny speech proclaiming India's independence. The day is a national holiday in all of India.

"Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we will redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.... We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again."
- Jawaharlal Nehru (Speech on Indian Independence Day, 1947)

Customs

Flags are proudly hoisted above ceremonies while younger children appear in costume to represent their idols of the Independence Era. Kites dot the Delhi skies and parades, patriotic songs, and picnicking families celebrate.

Where to Celebrate

Flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural programs take place in all the state capitals. In the cities around the country the flag hoisting is carried out by a senior official of that organization. In New Delhi, the Prime Minister of India hoists the Indian flag on the ramparts of the historical site, Red Fort. This is telecast live, highlighting the achievements of the government during the past year. The Prime Minister also pays his tribute to leaders of the freedom struggle.

Germany

Date: October 3rd

History

German Unity Day (German: Tag der Deutschen Einheit) celebrates the unification of West Germany and East Germany. A public holiday, this marks the official reunion of the two sides of Germany on October 3rd, 1990. Customs

Festivals celebrate the best of Germany with wurst (sausage), beers, speeches, and giant Ferris wheels to look over the nation.

To note the significance of unity, many mosques open to the general public. This is an initiative to stimulate contact between Muslims and non-Muslims and to emphasize the role that Muslims played in forming modern Germany.

Where to Celebrate

The Day of German Unity is celebrated each year with a ceremonial act and a citizens's festival (Bürgerfest). This changes location each year, although the largest cities of Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, and Frankfurt always provide great festivities. Berlin's Strasse des 17. Juni and area surrounding the Brandenburg Gate is a focal point for celebration. Munich's Oktoberfest runs until October 3rd to commemorate (if the Sunday in question falls on the first or second day of October).

United Kingdom

The United Kingdom is unusual in that it does not have a recognized national day. The Queen's Official Birthday (usually falling on a Saturday in the first half of June) is sometimes considered as a substitute. Various campaigns have championed a common holiday, but the closest thing is the four constituent nations of the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) each have National Saints's days.

Where to Celebrate

Patron saints' days are usually low-key affairs. However, there are certain saints and celebrations that set each apart.

  • England (April 23rd) - St George's Day is a major feast and national holiday in England. People celebrate by wearing a red rose or the St George's Cross flag.
  • Scotland (November 30th) - St Andrew's Day (Scots: Saunt Andra's Day, Scottish Gaelic: Latha Naomh Anndra) is the official bank holiday of Scotland. Saint Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland and the Flag of Scotland (the Saltire or Saint Andrew's Cross) flies on every building.
  • Wales (March 1st) - The patron saint of Wales is Saint David and Saint David's Day (Welsh: Dydd Gwyl Dewi). Parades, concerts, and food festivals mark the event.
  • Northern Ireland (March 17th)- Saint Patrick's Day (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig, "the Day of the Festival of Patrick") is a cultural and religious holiday. The day is celebrated by church attendance, green attire, and parades.
