The country's post services are operated by The Romanian Post (Poșta Română). Letters and parcels can be sent either economy, or priority. The Romanian Post also offers money transfer services and the possibility to make certain payments.

The post offices usually open Monday to Friday, between 8:00 - 16:00, but some bigger offices may have longer opening hours and may work on Saturday mornings as well.

Letters are addressed:

Mihai Ionescu (Name and surname of recipient)
Exemplu S.R.L. (Company name, if a business letter)
Str. Libertatii, Nr. 4 (Address 1: Street name, Street number)
Bloc A7, Scara 2, Ap. 29 (Address 2: Block number, Staircase number, Apartment Number)
550349 (Zip Code)
Sibiu Jud. Sibiu (City, County)
Romania (Country)

For Bucharest addresses, the county is omitted, but the number of the Sector should appear (from 1 to 6).

Zip codes in Romania are 6-digit numbers. The zip codes in Bucharest begin with 01-. Zip codes can be searched on the Romanian Post website.

Addresses should be written on the bottom right part of the back of the letter or parcel.

Postage Prices

Letters and packages sent economy within Romania or the European Union arrive in five working days. The prices depend on the dimensions and the weight of the package. In order to be considered a letter, packages must weigh below 2 kilograms. Otherwise, parcel fees apply.

Stamps can only be bought at the post offices.

The service of priority deliveries within Romania is called Prioripost. Deliveries arrive in 12-36 hours, depending on the distance.

It is also possible to send priority mail to other countries, through Express Mail Service. The delivery times and fees depend on the country and the weight of the package.

Prices depend on the type of delivery and the weight of the package. Examples of rates:

  • Deliveries of letters within Romania, economy: 1.30 - 2.50 RON
  • Deliveries of letters abroad, economy: 3.50 - 119 RON
  • Deliveries of letters within Romania, priority: 11.30 - 13.50 RON

The Romanian Post offers a tracking service for all deliveries.

Keep in mind that for some international deliveries, customs duties may apply.

Post Offices in Romania

Romania has an extensive network of post offices, which can be found in the majority of localities. To locate the post office nearest to you, visit the Post Office finder.

Letters can also be dropped at the drop boxes on the street, which are red and have the Romanian Post logo.

Mail Services in Romania

When changing homes, it is possible to request for your correspondence to be forwarded to your new address. In order to use this service, a formal request should be made by the addressee at the nearest post office. Additional fees are charged.

It is also possible for individuals or companies to rent a post office box in a postal branch. In order to do so, the addressee must file a written request with the post branch, which will be reviewed based on the availability of post office boxes. A basic monthly subscription is 14.50 RON.
