Gas, Electricity, Water

Gas

Gas (along with electricity) is usually already connected to your home in Budapest, with the exception of recently built buildings. In order to connect to a utility service provider the attendant is required to fill out an energy application form, have a record of meter reading, and proof of identity.

A utility can be connected while the attendee is out of the country as long as the third party is notified and an authorization letter needs to be signed by two witnesses.

Electricity Rates

Electricity meters are read once a year and an estimate is billed monthly.

Electricity for a 3-room flat is on average 10-15,000 HUF a month.

Water

In order to get connected to a water provider in Hungary, you must be able to provide a record of meter reading, house purchase contract or rental agreement, and proof of identity.

Properties in Hungary have either a main meter or a sub meter.

If there is a main meter, then the bill is paid directly to the water company.

If an apartment or a house has a sub meter then the bill will be paid to the building's management. If there is no sub meter, it is advised to get one installed. There is a requirement to have sub meters read every month and report by telephone and then the bill is made out accordingly.
